The sky of Salamanca
An astrological representation at the University
The astronomical ceiling of Salamanca (also known as the sky of Salamanca) is a truly fascinating artistic and historical element. It is located in the old library of the University of Salamanca, one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Europe. This ceiling dates from the 15th century and is the work of Fernando Gallego and his workshop, commissioned by Bishop Alonso de Fonseca.
The astronomical ceiling is characterized by its detailed representation of the firmament, including constellations and astrological figures. It is an excellent example of the influence of astrology on medieval and Renaissance thought. At that time, astrology was considered an important science and was closely linked to medicine, philosophy and religion.
The meaning of the ceiling is multiple. On the one hand, it reflects the interest and veneration for astronomical and astrological knowledge of the time. On the other hand, it can also be interpreted as a representation of the vision of the world and the universe according to the understanding of the 15th century. This ceiling is not only a work of art, but also a historical testimony of how the cosmos was perceived and its influence on everyday life during the Renaissance.
The ceiling is filled with various constellations and the twelve signs of the zodiac, painted with great detail and precision. Many of the constellations are represented by mythological figures, which add a level of symbolism and craftsmanship to the work. These mythological figures serve not only to identify the constellations but also to convey cultural narratives and beliefs of the time.
Several experts believe that some of these signs come from the thought of Claudius Ptolemy, who, in his work the Almagest, described 48 constellations.
So, if you happen to be in the city of Salamanca, you already have an interesting and mystical place to visit.
